It is still seen as something magical to reach the age of one hundred years. However, the number of people who reach 100 years of age has been increasing continuously for the last few decades. Many of them enjoy their advanced old age in relatively good health. Over a period of five years, photographer Andreas Labes portrayed 100 Centenarians within the framework of a unique research project at Kiel University that investigates the molecular mechanisms of healthy ageing. Together with the director of the Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology, Prof. Schreiber, as the editor, Labes presents “100 Jahre Leben – Porträts und Einsichten”. In this book, his remarkable black-and-white photographs have been published for the first time. The pictures are accompanied by short biographies and an essay on the work and perspectives of the age researchers completes the book.
